Preparation for the energy of language

TANAKA Akio

The energy of language seems to be one of the most fundamental theme for the further step-up  study on language at the present for me. But the theme was hard to put on the mathematical description. Now I present some preparatory  papers written so far.

Thanks to physics about which I ever dreamt in my future

TANAKA Akio

In the days of high school, I deeply dreamt that someday physics would perfectly write over this world's phenomena by the clearest descriptions. So I longed for studying physics in the future. But I selected language's diverse wideness at the university, from where returning the clear descriptive situation represented by physics needed long and winding road for me. Now in my mind probably language and physics or mathematics are happily live together constructing the world's one main frame. I wonder why I took so much time to reach here. Long time ago, at least Pascal's days, philosophy and mathematics were both sides of shield for solving the world's hard problems. It is very appropriate that the fact is solved from every fields not being partitioned any artificial walls. Philosophy may be solved by mathematics and mathematics may opened by physical phenomenon. Now they all became common sense. Only I reached here delaying rather late. I am now situated in tranquil field. Thanks to so many pioneers, especially in mathematics. Also to physics about which I ever dreamt in my future.

Sekinan Essay

The Days of Sekinan Library

TANAKA Akio

Sekinan Library was opened at Tachikawa, Tokyo in April 1986. Till March of that year I was a student of the post graduate course for cultural sciences and also worked at a night course of a high school for keeping daily life. At university I studied the history of Buddhism of ancient Japan mainly reading old Japanised Chinese writings while learning the history of European linguistics typically represented by The Linguistic Circle of Prague in 1920s. Buddhism was taught from Prof. KAWASAKI Tsuneyuki and linguistics was from Prof. CHINO Eiichi. In those days I had been concerned with the presentation of historical text by Chinese characters which was not any inflections in sentence, so usually called isolated language, which grammar only being controlled by word order.

I wondered that what is word order, how the grammar changes in the non-inflation words. All were in the utterly dark world because European linguistics had not made up the developed isolated language like classical Chinese. But in China especially in the era of Qing dynasty, many linguists were studied Chinese classics using vast methods historically formed since circa 500 B.C.

At March 1986, I determined that study theme was limited in the linguistic study of ideogram like Chinese character, for the study of which a new perspective would be appeared from our Oriental region still now using ideogram like China and Japan. From April I started my study while teaching modern and classical Chinese at Sekinan Library. At night frequently being called as the lecturer of Buddhism and Chinese of civic education. At that time the most interesting theme of the study was ancient Chinese characters inscribed on oracle bones and tortoise shells, which already showed the perfect system of ideogram and had been studied in the Qing dynasty's linguists, in which I was deeply fascinated by WANG Guowei's work Quantangjilin.

Over decade after, in 2003 I could first written a paper on diagram focused on inherent time in Chinese characters. The title was " On Time Property Inherent in Characters" and its direct succession, "Quantum Theory for Language" which was presented at a conference opened at Nara in December 2003.

The First Paper on Inherent Time in Word

The First Paper on Inherent Time in Word

26/07/2014 10:18

In 2003 I wrote a paper which shows the inherent time in word, titled On Time Property Inherent in Characters.
In those days I frequently looked upon the reading on linguistic history of Chinese characters. Qing dynasty is like a sitting sun delight with classical study of Chinese Classics.

In October 2002, I contracted pneumonia and entered a hospital two weeks. At the hospital pneumonia smoothly recovered to usual health. So I thought on my study life and my main target of language at the free time. From the hospital's window the Okutama Mountains were always clearly seen. Seeing the mountains, I gradually determined that the research must be led by clear description, not by traditional style of historical language study.

But my study was mainly put on WANG Guowei's style until then. His life work, Quangtangjilin is the only book in my life. Then at the hospital bed, I confirmed that my study was mixed to clear description and traditional WANG's work.

In March 2003, I stayed at Hakuba, Nagano for tasting the passing wintry season’s landscape. At the place,  I suddenly floating up an idea of language study that word has time in it and that time and meaning are all shaped to be elements. At the result I finished the paper, On Time Property Inherent in Characters.

Road to Language Universals

TANAKA Akio

Sekinan Research Field of Language was established in 2003 for the study on language universals, that was the core theme since my youth time some 40 years ago in the 1970s. But real start was much later in the late 1980s.

In 1986 I established the Sekinan Library for the base of study at Tachikawa, TokyoAt that time my main theme was declined to the study of old Chinese character's classical semantics using the traditional study of the form of characters reading Qing Dynasty's WANG Guowei. The study from the direction had not given me so rich results. I at the same time read some mathematical books influenced from Bourbaki that was the big stream in 1970s in Japan. Set theory represented by Gödel was also the favourite at the time.

In 1990s I determined the direction of study only to language universals taught from CHINO Eiichi, one of the modern typical philologists of Japan. He taught me almost all the aspects of European philology that were unknown for me. In the various themes he gave me, the most impressive was the existence of the Linguistic Circle of Prague. Above all Sergej Karcevskij was overwhelmingly deep and moving. But Karcevskij's  approach was seemed to be intuitive and far from clear descriptiveness.

I began to learn the theme hinted by Karcevskij while learning Gödel, Bourbaki and Wittgenstein that was also gave me the big influence form the age 20s. I had frequently read Wittgenstein's TRACTATUS. But my base of math was so poor and never became the descriptive use for language's delicate phases. So I again restarted math from geometry that gave the most familiar and clear image for me. My intuitive image and basic math description were seemed to be able offer in nearly millennium days.

In spring 2003 I knew the application paper for the international symposium held  by a certain institute. I arranged the short paper for it till early summer and sent it. The paper was happily adopted  as one of the language and literature section of the symposium. The paper's title was Quantum Theory for Language. It was again arranged next year 2004 as the title Quantum Theory for Language synopsis.

The establish date of Sekinan Research Field of Language  was 23 August 2003, that was the date of completion of proto-conceptive paper of Quantum Theory for Language at the hutte in Hakuba, Nagano. Now the time passed rapidly 10 years. The home site, sekinan, has become full by the papers accumulation. So the new site has become indispensible.

Under the Dim Light

TANAKA Akio

I frequently talked with CHINO Eiichi at the coffee shop near the station we used to get on. The shop was at the second floor and the steps upstairs always sounded squeaking. Under the dim light the topics of conversation was on language or linguistics after all. He was already the university professor but I was a poor research student. But he was always showed me the general tenderness.
The subject he gave me were impressive and useful for me, in which the most important is the history of The Linguistic Circle of Prague and the excellent pioneers of language study. He had of course the unique approach to the study but I had never any conspicuous one except boundless interest on the study.
In his wide and precious telling for me I gradually determined my course to proceed. It was the making of basic and radical foundation on natural language by searching the structure of language through simple and clear description. For keeping this difficult aim I had a decision that there was only way to use mathematics that I had abandoned at the past for its hardness.
In my age 20s, I had read Ludwig Wittgenstein and Nicolas Bourbaki in concentrating. I did not clearly understand  Wittgenstein's approach. But I borrowed his writing style that was simple and clear. So my early work's descriptions were nearly at him. But I decided that I never adopted strongly-intuitive thinking.
I always considered mathematical basis or analogy. My aim was the independence from the intuitive description. Keeping on this course, there was seen the mathematical basis that I must adopt the model in which language universals are clearly described. I entered to the mathematical description of study that was confirmed premises of my way.

Memory on Father, Azalea

Memory on Father, Azalea

TANAKA Akio

My father liked nature of my homeland and frequently went to the coppice in the hills called Sayama Hills that was spread at the west area of Tokyo. The Hills are also called the Green Island in Tokyo.
He liked the gardening of natural tiny trees in the garden and the trees were gradually grown up to the fine Bonsai. He made various Bonsai in the garden. The main are Japanese azaleas that bloomed splendid flowers in May. The month was really the flower kingdom of the azalea. He also liked the Bonsai of zelkova, that were I liked the most and probably father's talent to Bonsai was appealed in finest style, I feel still now.

Tokyo Station Restoration Completed

Tokyo Station Restoration Completed

TANAKA Akio

Tokyo Station has been completed restoration work yesterday at 1 October 2012. The station is probably most favourite station in Japan for me. From my student times I have used it innumerably. In the late 1960, in my student days, the station's main gate Marunouchi was rather calm and lonesome except rush hours of business persons.
Now the situation has vastly changed. It has become the most wonderful station and around the station has also most lively space from early morning till late night. I love the atmosphere of this station and its around.
The bookstore Maruzen close Marunouchi gate is my pleasurable space for update information on near 2 million books published in Japan and abroad. If you come to Japan, please see the station and go outside to the Imperial Palace some 10 minutes walk from Marunouchi gate. You can appreciate the both faces of modern and classical Japan. Probably it will be the fantastic experience on Japan.
Tokyo Station was constructed at 5 December 1914. The original station was burnt at 25 May 1945 by the Tokyo attack of the World War 2.

Lotus Flowers at Royal Gift Ueno Park, Tokyo

Lotus Flowers at Royal Gift Ueno Park, Tokyo

Lotus flowers are always beautifully bloom at the pond of the Tokyo National Museum, Imperial-gift Ueno Park , Tokyo. When I was a student of the university, I frequently went to see the garnered items of the some museums located in the park. The photo was taken at 25 May 2011.
I also like the National Museum of Western Art in the Ueno park, that was designed by Le Corbusier. This lotus photo’s colour is a little similar with the Monet’s paintings themed on lotus flowers.

Hanno, Saitama Revisited

Hanno, Saitama Revisited

TANAKA Akio

Today I and wife went to Hanno, Saitama that is located at the next to my home town, north-west of Tokyo . The city was the very intimate place for some dear fiends of high school days.

We were always play in home town in the long vacations of summer, winter and spring, but sometimes using bicycles we went to Hanno to play the baseball at the city ground and see the Iruma River that flows the centre part of the city and rarely learnt the vacation work at the old city library alike a tiny elementary school building.

Along the bicycle road used to go and back, fantastic silver grasses were calmly swaying in the Autumn wind. We run fast the slope road seeing the rail road at right side. Occasionally  we met the diesel train.

Today I went there with wife, with whom I went camping or barbecue at the river side far old days together with two children. Now they are already growing up and working in the central Tokyo. I and wife are enough old and feel tranquil seeing the river and the hills behind.

When the children were very young, we let them buy some confectioneries at the river side tiny shops that are still remain in the same old style. The time flew fast and all afar went. The river is only sparkling with same beauty.

Old Shops in Home town

Old Shops in Home town

TANAKA Akio

My home town belongs Metropolis Tokyo, located at the west suburb, some 40 km afar. I was born and  grew up here, so many tiny shops were very intimate and to them I have dear feelings.
There are some old shops still now, where in the boy's days I bought the daily use things for being ordered by mother sometimes from father. The remained styles of them are now all off-painted wall, unreadable signboards and rough roofs. Nowadays people including with my family always go to the big supermarket or shopping mall having very wide parking lots. Old main roads and shops decline day by day. It is surely modern social phenomenon. But we that know the ever busy conditions of the shops, feel very sad and lonesome.

In the garden, there is a tiny root of aster, that was ever also blooming in my old home. My mother made much of it. So the flowers had increased year by year.
Recently in my garden, I found out that the way of mother was one of the most important style for really loving the flowers. The tiny root someday will become more flourishing without clearly noticing if one really cultivate it. This truth is the gift from mother, noticing much too late for me.

At Bank of Dam Again

At Bank of Dam Again

TANAKA Akio

At bank of dam we conversed with friends on many innocent themes in our youth days. Long time ago the place was the sight of the fireworks, for which father took me and elder sister to see in the summer night. When returning home you perfectly slept soundly at father’s back, the sister said to me later.
After some thirty years after, we came again with the family to play in the fallen leaves at the bank of dam. Children were rolling down at the slope of the bank wearing golden leaves on the clothes.
And after half a century we have come again at the bank with wife protecting leg’s slight pains each other.

Dr. Murayama’s Dental Clinic at home town

Dr. Murayama’s Dental Clinic  at home town

Dr.Murayam’s dental clinic was my family’s clinic that was located at the almost centric part of tiny home town. The Doctor was older graduate from my Alma mater. He was tall and always spoke calm and gently.
One day I went to the clinic for treating. After the treatment he said that the old boy’s association would be held at one day of one month.  The day came and I honestly went to the place of the association, where is the home town’s temple which priest was also an old boy of the high school. The attending member at that day was only four. Older three talked each other on all sorts of things. I only heard their conversation because I was young at age 20s and the remains were probably 50s or 60s. The meeting ends by the old day’s graduates reports and so on.
Now I remember that day and really think I happily attended that meeting. All the three members are dead now. I only remains. There are some old boys not attending that day. But Dr. Murayama probably showed me the atmosphere of the tiny association of the group. I sincerely thanked him. He was surely my dental doctor but over this fact he was a respectable old boy with soft gentle voice.
